Summer camp continues going strong here at The Art Center! We've been overwhelmed by the creativity shown by our campers so far, and we're back to share a small sampling of the wildly varied artwork that's been created at our camps over the past couple of weeks.

K-2 Drawing and Painting Week 2: Fairytale

Campers in this camp used classic fairy tale inspiration to get practice with a range of art materials and skill, from color mixing to pencil control to fine motor cutting skills. Here are a couple of the pieces students chose to share with us from this camp:

Our next Fairytale themed camp is held Week 8, July 13-17 and has just a couple seats left!

3rd-5th Drawing & Painting Week 2: Food Frenzy

This drawing and painting camp used delicious food as a source of inspiration for their multimedia projects. They had a watermelon themed afternoon where they used their observational skills to make 3D representations of sliced watermelon, then searched through actual watermelons to find seeds to plant.

They ended the day by painting watermelon themed pots and planting their seeds to see if they can grow a watermelon plant of their very own.

We still have plenty of seats available for the next Food Frenzy themed Drawing and Painting Camp in Week 8, July 13-17.

Youth Ceramics Week 2:

Our younger side of the clay studio was hard at work again crafting original pieces by hand! We have some functional plates and cups decorated with imagination and care, and some unique sculptures that represent the interests of the artists who made them.

Teen Pottery: Week 2

Our teen students continue to astound us with the range of creativity and skill on display. The wheel is a tough tool to master, and their ingenuity in their handbuilt sculptural pieces is astonishing to witness.

While most of our ceramics camps are full this summer, the occasional seat opens up as we get closer to each week. We also have a brand new ceramics camp just opened for Week 9 (July 20-24) that teaches more handbuilding techniques to students grades 4th-8th.

Teen Painting: Week 2

The teens are just as creative and dedicated to skill building on the visual side as they are on the ceramics side of the building. Leslie Murphy led her students through charcoal studies, taught painting techniques, and trained them in the process of planning their own compositions from thumbnail to final piece.

Leslie also teaches most of our adult painting classes throughout the year, including the Art Bites series that offer small tastes of oil and acrylic painting.

Anime and Manga Grades 4th-8th: Week 3

Our anime and manga students were extra busy last week, doing studies to create their own take on anime and manga characters and even drawing their own manga pages! On Friday morning, students shared their pages and explained their story in a mini showcase.

The next anime camp will be held Week 8, and we also have an anime class that meets throughout the year.

Teen Creative Writing Camp

While there are no project photos for creative writing, the students were still hard at work all week. They did a range of writing exercises and skill drills and then engaged their teacher in writing battles. Our 5 students ended up writing a whopping 34,179 words in 5 days- just on their own novel projects. This number doesn't include any of the writing exercises they did outside of battle. That's half a novel in one week! Individually, each student wrote somewhere between 5,000-8,000 words on their projects.

We can't wait to see what gets created during the rest of the camps this summer! There are still seats available in several of our camps, and the fun doesn't stop there. Check out our Youth classes, starting up in the fall, for more creative development for your artistic student.
