Now Hiring: Summer Camp Art Instructor (Seasonal)
Pay $625/week
Full Job Description:
The Art Center in Johns Creek runs an award-winning summer camp program focused on teaching the arts to school aged students. We are seeking new art instructors to handle drawing and painting camps for students in grades K-8th. Priority is given to instructors comfortable teaching students in Kindergarten through 2nd grade. We are also open to hearing proposals for specialty art camps (like jewelry or printmaking) for all ages.
Camp instructors are responsible for managing classrooms of up to 16 students (assistants will be provided for camps with more than 10 students). Instructors will lead students in the creation of two age-appropriate, fun, and challenging art projects per day for the week of camp, with the occasional filler project and activity as needed. Curriculum support is provided by The Art Center, as are all supplies and filler projects.
Essential Functions
-
Guide students through the steps to complete art projects in a range of media, including watercolor, acrylic paint, colored pencil, collage, and marker.
-
Communicate art lessons in an age-appropriate, upbeat, and entertaining manner.
-
Manage a classroom to maintain a disciplined and safe environment while keeping the camp day fun for all students.
-
Maintain supplies and equipment in the classroom.
-
Monitor students during outdoor breaks to ensure safe play.
Expectations and Work Environment
Camp instruction runs from 9:00 am-2:45 pm. Instructors are expected to be in the classroom by 8:30 am and to stay until at least 3:15 to assist with pick-up. Instructors are expected to clean and reset their classrooms for evening classes and are not to leave for the day until the classroom is in good condition for adult students.
Camp curricula and supply lists are due to The Art Center in April to ensure that we can provide the supplies needed for each student. Instructors are expected to create samples of each project ahead of time both to assist in marketing their classes and to ensure that the instructor understands all materials involved and how to communicate each step of the project (and to ensure that the project is achievable in the allotted camp time and can be handled by students). Instructors can design their own projects (pending approval by the Program Director) or select projects from a collection of pre-designed lesson plans provided by The Art Center.
A mandatory paid instructor meeting will be scheduled in May (we provide options to our instructors to help work around existing schedules). Instructors must pass a background check and obtain CPR/First Aid Training. If instructors don’t have CPR/First Aid certification, training will be provided or compensated by The Art Center.
First day set-up might require an earlier start time. There is also time allotted on Friday afternoon and on weekends to get your supplies set up for the following camp week.
On good weather days, students take a 15 minute break outdoors, and instructors are expected to monitor their behavior outside to ensure safe and friendly play. Lunch breaks go from 12-1 each day, with instructors putting on a movie from our DVD collection to keep students entertained during the meal.
The Art Center staff will be on hand to assist with any major disciplinary problems, and instructors with larger classes or younger students are also supplied with an assistant to help with maintaining the classroom.
Instructors are scheduled weekly and must be available Monday-Friday from 8:30 am-3:30 pm for the full week for which they are scheduled.
