In this beginning to early-intermediate drawing course we work with a range of techniques and dry media. The class is designed as a series of sequential projects, building on fundamental drawing principles such as proportion, scale, value and perspective. Students are introduced to common media utilized to complete drawings. Students also gain understanding and knowledge of space, light and composition while learning to "see" in a manner that translates the subject into a drawing or painting. Supply List Graphite Pencils: 4B, 2B, HB, 2H, 4H and any others you would like to try Paper Blending Sticks, sometimes called tortillons, with sandpaper for sharpening them Kneaded Eraser Sketchbook with drawing paper, 9x12 Curriculum Breakdown: Week 1: Learning to make the mental shift into "perception mode" using blind contour drawing, upside down drawing, and using positive and negative shapes/spaces Week2: Value and shading - using a value scale and shading the four basic shapes (sphere, cone, cylinder, and cube) Week3: Still life with grid - use the grid technique to draw a small still-life and then shade it in (the example in the class description is a student drawing from this class) Week4: Figure drawing/ basic proportions of the body - using gesture drawing as a warm-up, and photos of athletes and dancers for reference Week5: Faces and features - drawing a face using proportional guidelines and tips to improve eyes, mouth, nose, hair, ears, and shading Week 6: Perspective - basics of one point perspective and how to show depth in drawings with buildings and interiors Week7: Pen and ink - Techniques of drawing with pen and ink, including hatching, cross hatching, stippling, and showing various textures and patterns Week 8: Animals - how to break down a sketch into simple basic shapes and how to draw fur, basic animal anatomy Example of student 'Basic Drawing' work below:

Mixed media for beginners is a fun introduction to painting and sculpting. This class will allow students to experiment with different materials and textures to help them discover and create exciting new material relationships. Students will be focusing on material study and we will have fun materials to experiment and play with daily. We will be exploring 2d and 3d art using materials like paper, air dry clay, newspapers/magazines, acrylics, charcoal, canvases and found objects. This class will also allow parents to stop by for any of the daily workshops for a small fee of $30 per class. Drop in payment will be accepted upon arrival. The course includes ongoing information about tools and materials, always taking composition and design into consideration. Students will learn to create a painting from concept to completion in oil or acrylic media. We will focus on proper planning prior to starting a painting, as well as, basic layering and blending techniques, color mixing, handling the brush and more. Students will work at their own pace in a relaxed and supportive setting. Each session will feature 3 instructor demonstrations of beginning-intermediate painting techniques. Because everyone's needs are different, supplies will be discussed during the first class. New students, bring your sketch pad and your ideas if you've never painted before. New students who have already begun your painting journey, bring anything you're currently working on as well as materials that you already have. Returning students, bring your current painting and materials. Class size limited to 10 to provide an intimate experience with your instructor. - Hand Paint a Velvet Scarf
Students will be introduced to fiber-reactive dyes to create a luminous, vibrantly colored, oblong scarf. We will suspend a 9" x 42" silk/rayon scarf on a PVC frame and apply different techniques to the outstretched fabric, including the application of fluid and liquid dye. The result will be a soft, cozy and elegant accessory; perfect for Georgia's mild seasons! This class is appropriate for all levels of art skills. Ages 18+ Instructor fee of $25 paid directly to the instructor at the start of class.

- Week 3 Grades 7-12: Creative Writing
Do you have a novel simmering in your mind, waiting to come to life? In this camp, you will explore several fundamental skills for effective creative writing. This isn’t a grammar lesson- we’ll be going into different brainstorming techniques, learning about character psychology and worldbuilding tools, and practicing techniques for writing descriptions and dialogues that make your story come to life. At the end of each camp day, you’ll get words down in your own novel draft as you engage in a writing battle with your teacher! Notebooks will be provided, but students are encouraged to bring their own devices if they prefer to write on computers.

Immerse your child in a creative experience and spark their artistic talents! Your child will acquire drawing and painting skills while exploring mixed media and artistic techniques. A fun, educational, age appropriate art class for the young art enthusiast. After School Art - Students experiment with an array of materials and tools including watercolor and acrylic paints, and chalk pastels. Class is held in your child's school and begins after the school day dismissal. Includes all supplies. You must send a change of dismissal form with your child notifying the school that your child attends this after school class. Once you've registered your child for this class, an email will be sent containing the form. Please fill it out and submit it to your school. If you would like to make arrangements to set up a payment plan; please call The Art Center at 770-623-8448. Discover the joys of pottery in this handbuilding class for students of all levels! From crafting functional ceramics like cups and bowls to exploring your artistic side with sculpting, there's something for you. We'll guide you through different techniques while leaving room for your imagination to soar and have fun. Although this is not a project based class, projects may be assigned to assist students in expanding their handbuilding skills. Chen Pin Hsu will be the lead instructor on (Tuesday and Friday mornings) on the following dates: March 31, April 3, 14, 17 *Included in the price of your class is a 25lb bag of clay as well as 2.5 hours of open studio time per week, to be used immediately following your class. Students may purchase 1 additional bag of clay from The Art Center over the course of the session. For a total of 50lbs maximum per session. Tool kits must be purchased by students and are available at most Dick Blick and Michaels stores. *Upcharge for porcelain clay: 1st bag $20, 2nd bag $50. Clay can be purchased at the front desk.
