- Fall) Abstract Painting in Acrylics
This course will have guided step-by-step demonstrations each week consisting of paint techniques with acrylics and acrylic mediums on canvas. We will learn texturing, sponging, stippling, glazing, dry-brush, palette knife, dripping, blending & other techniques. We will learn how to prepare surfaces & build up the paint surface with layers. We will learn how to select, blend & mix colors to create pure abstracts, imaginary scenes, and natural forms. You will learn how to add depth with layers with texture and color & create a balanced abstract composition. SUPPLY LIST: The instructor will bring examples of all materials the first day of class. You can want to wait to see the supplies before purchasing them. If you already purchased acrylic paints, bring what you have & a couple of stretched canvases or canvas boards. -Brushes: An assortment of soft sythetic brushes from flats, rounds, and filberts in a range of sizes from small to large, one 2”soft, flat “gesso” brush. -Primed & stretched canvases or canvas boards. Suggested: 11x14, 12x16, 16x20. (Advanced painters can bring larger canvases). -Palette: disposable palettes such as foam plates or paper palettes -Palette knife: at least one flexible pointed chisel-shaped metal knife -1 lg carry-all for wet paintings and a tool box for your supplies -1 sm jar of Light Modeling Paste (see example in class) -1 sm jar of Gloss Gel Medium (see example in class) -1 sm bottle of Acrylic Matte Medium (see example in class) - I container for water (such as a larger yogurt container) -1 roll of paper towels - disposable gloves (optional) Paint: names of paints are all different; here is a recommended list with comparative names for acrylic paints. When in doubt get a set of primary colors, plus black & white and you can add to that as you need. Purchase 2 or 4 oz. tubes of paint, not liquid or jars. Cadmium Red Medium or Red Medium Cadmium Red Light or Vermilion Alizarin Crimson or Magenta Lemon Yellow or Yellow Light Cadmium Yellow Medium and Deep Yellow Ultramarine Blue or Cobalt Blue Phthalo Blue or Prussian Blue Phthalo Green or Viridian Dioxazine Purple or any dark Violet color Titanium White is the preferred brightest white Any Black color is fine. Handbuilding - Beyond the Basics Dive deeper into the art of handbuilding ceramics in this intermediate-level course designed for those who have a basic understanding of clay techniques and are ready to expand their skills. You will explore advanced handbuilding methods, experimenting with texture, surface decoration, and complex forms while developing your own unique style. Must have completed four or more handbuilding courses or have equivalent experience. Please bring your own set of tools and your ideas to class. Want to try acrylic painting but aren't sure you'd like to commit to buying all the materials and taking an 8 week class? Look no further! Join artist Leslie Murphy for a 4 week class and learn the basics of acrylic painting! Working with a guided, step by step process, we will create two painting studies, touching on basics of the medium and materials needed, color mixing, handling the brush, and more. This is an excellent way to dip your toes in the waters of painting and is a great stepping stone to an 8 week class. $10 supply fee paid directly to instructor during first class. Art bites intro classes can be taken in either order (1 first or 2 first or vice versa). Each intro class has the same level of painting, just different projects. Intro to acrylic painting 1 should only be taken once. Meets Tuesdays 9:30a-11a in August.

In this class we will be creating both fun and functional pieces using the basics of handbuilding- coil, pinch, and slab. We will also explore different surface decorations such as sgraffito, slip trailing, and wax resist. This class is not project based, so bring your ideas!
