  • Art Bites: Intro to Acrylic Painting 2

    Want to try acrylic painting but aren't sure you'd like to commit to buying all the materials and taking an 8 week class? Look no further! Join artist Leslie Murphy for a 4 week class and learn the basics of acrylic painting! Working with a guided, step by step process, we will create two painting studies, touching on basics of the medium and materials needed, color mixing, handling the brush, and more. This is an excellent way to dip your toes in the waters of painting and is a great stepping stone to an 8 week class. $10 supply fee paid directly to instructor during first class. Art bites intro classes can be taken in either order (1 first or 2 first or vice versa). Each intro class has the same level of painting, just different projects. Intro to acrylic painting 1 should only be taken once. Meets Tuesdays 9:30a-11a in September.

  • SUM) Improv for Adults - July

    This short session is an easy way to get a taste of how the art and playfulness of improv can impact your life in a positive way. Students will get a 4-class sampling of the gifts that can come from improvising. Through enjoyable games and exercises, students who benefit from regular improv practice gain more confidence, creativity, and cognitive flexibility while exercising the basic improv skills of listening, reacting, collaborating with others, and trusting oneself. Min 4 students/Max 18 No experience necessary - Class is open to adults 18+

  • Fall) Basic Drawing Tuesday 7p-9p

    In this beginning to early-intermediate drawing course we work with a range of techniques and dry media. The class is designed as a series of sequential projects, building on fundamental drawing principles such as proportion, scale, value and perspective. Students are introduced to common media utilized to complete drawings. Students also gain understanding and knowledge of space, light and composition while learning to "see" in a manner that translates the subject into a drawing or painting. Supply List Graphite Pencils: 4B, 2B, HB, 2H, 4H and any others you would like to try Paper Blending Sticks, sometimes called tortillons, with sandpaper for sharpening them Kneaded Eraser Sketchbook with drawing paper, 9x12 Curriculum Breakdown: Week 1: Learning to make the mental shift into "perception mode" using blind contour drawing, upside down drawing, and using positive and negative shapes/spaces Week2: Value and shading - using a value scale and shading the four basic shapes (sphere, cone, cylinder, and cube) Week3: Still life with grid - use the grid technique to draw a small still-life and then shade it in (the example in the class description is a student drawing from this class) Week4: Figure drawing/ basic proportions of the body - using gesture drawing as a warm-up, and photos of athletes and dancers for reference Week5: Faces and features - drawing a face using proportional guidelines and tips to improve eyes, mouth, nose, hair, ears, and shading Week 6: Perspective - basics of one point perspective and how to show depth in drawings with buildings and interiors Week7: Pen and ink - Techniques of drawing with pen and ink, including hatching, cross hatching, stippling, and showing various textures and patterns Week 8: Animals - how to break down a sketch into simple basic shapes and how to draw fur, basic animal anatomy Example of student 'Basic Drawing' work below:

    In this class we will be creating both fun and functional pieces using the basics of handbuilding- coil, pinch, and slab. We will also explore different surface decorations such as sgraffito, slip trailing, and wax resist. This class is not project based, so bring your ideas! Students of all levels are welcome!! *Included in the price of your class is a 25lb bag of clay as well as 2.5 hours of open studio time per week, to be used immediately following your class time. Students may purchase 1 additional bag of clay from The Art Center over the course of the session. For a total of 50lbs maximum per session. Tool kits must be purchased by students and are available at most Dick Blick and Michaels stores. *Upcharge for porcelain clay: 1st bag $20, 2nd bag $50.   • Fall) Share Your Story

    First person storytelling shows are all the rage on stages and podcasts across the country.  In this class, you will learn how to take true events from your own life and weave them into engaging performances. We will work on public speaking skills, presentation, story structure, different narrative approaches, and creating your own unique style.  Each week, students will be given a new assignment for how to structure a story.  Students choose their own subject matter for their personal stories.  This class culminates in a graduation performance, where each student will share a 3-7 minute personal story. Class occupancy: Min 4 / Max 8

  • Fall) Drawing with Debra Yaun

    Are you wanting to work on drawing skills in graphite or colored pencil? Or would you rather work in scratchboard, pastel or watercolor? Learn something new or brush up on your skills. Portrait, still life or nature whatever interests you. This class is for all levels of experience where you work on a project at your own speed and have fun! A project can be given to you or choose your own to work on in the medium you prefer. Reference material will be supplied if you don’t have your own. This class will meet for 6 weeks and is priced accordingly.

  • Week 6 Ceramics Camp Grades 2-6

    Learn how to create fun, decorative, and functional clay projects! Students will explore fundamental clay skills like pinch, coil, and slab to build their own ceramic creations. They will then learn glazing and surface decorating techniques to finish off their one-of-a-kind creations! Projects differ week to week. Registration closes Saturday, June 27 at 3pm.

  • Fall) Colored Pencil Monday 7p-9p

    Colored Pencil Society artist Susan Calderon will walk you through the stages of a colored pencil drawing. Learn techniques for creating rich and layered pieces in this versatile medium from this sought after instructor. Supply List Set of 24 Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils (Be careful not to buy Prismacolor Scholar or Prismacolor Watercolor Pencils Pencil Sharpener White vinyl eraser HB graphite pencil 1 sheet of steel gray Canson Mi-Tientes paper (we will cut this to size)

  • Fall) Monday Mini Masters

    Designed for youngsters in Kindergarten through 2nd Grade. These emerging artists, will have fun exploring art through a study of master artists. Students experiment with an array of materials and tools including watercolor and acrylic paints, chalk pastels, and collage. This age appropriate curriculum is based on a playful approach to art; teaching fine art techniques, art history, and building confidence. Instructed by Ms. Izzy! Includes all supplies. This class will also allow parents to stop by for any of the daily workshops for a small fee of $30 cash per class, please call ahead. Drop in fee to be paid directly to instructor upon arrival.

    Get your gears turning with fun steampunk themed artwork. Explore this fantastical sci-fi genre in a range of artistic mediums, including paint and marker, colored pencil and 3D objects. Registration closes Saturday, June 27 at 3pm.

  • H. Fall) Kate N Wed PM Clay Sculpture

    This ALL LEVEL sculpting class will focus on shapes, textures, and colors that make up the world around us and how to interpret them through clay. We will use the basics of handbuilding (coil, pinch, and slab techniques) to explore and expand your observational creativity. Strategies and techniques for completion, enhancing your creations through carving, surface treatments and techniques will be presented. This class is not project based. Students are encouraged to choose the type of sculpture or functional work would like to create. *Included in the price of your class is a 25lb bag of clay. Open studio hours will begin at 4pm on the day of your class. Students may purchase 1 additional bag of clay from The Art Center over the course of the session.
