  • Week 3 Grades 4-8: Anime

    Anime is a highly distinctive style of cartoon drawing which originated in Japan and enjoys immense worldwide popularity. Anime are the characters appearing in manga which are Japanese graphic novels and comic strips. There are a wide variety of manga appropriate for children through adult readers. Manga characters are instantly recognizable by their large eyes, highly stylized hair, fashionable clothing and overall expressive quality.

    Learn how to throw on the wheel to make fun and functional ceramic pieces! Teens will learn the techniques needed to create ceramic dishware as well as hand built clay sculptures. The pieces will be fired in a kiln and then students will learn different glazing and painting techniques to create truly unique ceramics. Art projects differ each week.

    Use this wonderful, spontaneous medium in a supportive atmosphere with lots of useful tips and techniques that give great results. The course includes ongoing information about tools and materials, always taking composition and design into consideration. If you are new to this medium or have some prior experience, you will love all the information you receive. Experienced students work on advanced techniques, composition and backgrounds.   • Spr) Interm-Adv Oil & Acrylic Tues PM

    Students will be encouraged to go the extra mile with preliminary drawings and color studies while working on their own paintings. Work at your own pace in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. Each session features 3 instructor demonstrations of advanced painting techniques. This class will delve deeper into color theory, mixing, and application, as well as, composition and design strategies. Because everyone's needs are different, supplies will be discussed during the first class. New students, bring your current painting in progress (if you have one) and any materials you already have. Returning students, bring your current painting and materials. Please note: This is not an appropriate class for beginners. Painting experience is required as students are expected to work independently in a larger class setting.   • E. Spr) KB Lim Tues AM Handbuilding

    Discover the joys of pottery in this handbuilding class for students of all levels! From crafting functional ceramics like cups and bowls to exploring your artistic side with sculpting, there's something for you. We'll guide you through different techniques while leaving room for your imagination to soar and have fun. Although this is not a project based class, projects may be assigned to assist students in expanding their handbuilding skills. Chen Pin Hsu will be the lead instructor on (Tuesday and Friday mornings) on the following dates: March 31, April 3, 14, 17 *Included in the price of your class is a 25lb bag of clay as well as 2.5 hours of open studio time per week, to be used immediately following your class. Students may purchase 1 additional bag of clay from The Art Center over the course of the session. For a total of 50lbs maximum per session. Tool kits must be purchased by students and are available at most Dick Blick and Michaels stores. *Upcharge for porcelain clay: 1st bag $20, 2nd bag $50. Clay can be purchased at the front desk.

  • Spr) Abstract Portraits in Acrylics

    This course will have guided step-by-step demonstrations each week consisting of paint techniques with acrylics and mixed media on canvas. Inspired by abstract painters such as Picasso, Matisse and other contemporary styles, we will explore expressive and imaginative ways to create abstract portraits. We will learn how to create designs, prepare surfaces and build up the paint surface with layers. We will learn how to select, blend and mix colors as well as texturing, sponging, stippling, glazing, dry-brush, palette knife, dripping, collage and other techniques. No previous drawing or painting experience is required to take this course. SUPPLY LIST The Instructor will bring examples of all materials the first day of class. You may want to wait to see all the materials before purchasing them. If you already purchased acrylic paints, bring what you have and a couple of stretched canvases or canvas boards. You can wait to purchase gels, pastes and mediums until after the first day of class. -Brushes: An assortment of soft synthetic brushes from flats, rounds, & filberts in a range of sizes from small to large, one 2” soft, flat “gesso” brush. This class meets for 4 weeks and is priced accordingly. -Primed & stretched canvases or canvas boards.   • Spr) Improv for Middle Grades

    Improv is the best introduction to the theatre arts for young students. Players will build on their imaginations while they spontaneously create stories, characters, and scenes. Through fun games and exercises, students will learn the essential improv skills of listening, reacting, collaborating with others, and trusting oneself.  Improv nurtures confidence and connection in students.
