Learn how to create fun, decorative, and functional clay projects! Students will explore fundamental clay skills like pinch, coil, and slab to build their own ceramic creations. They will then learn glazing and surface decorating techniques to finish off their one-of-a-kind creations! Projects differ week to week.

This short session is an easy way to get a taste of how the art and playfulness of improv can impact your life in a positive way. Students will get a 4-class sampling of the gifts that can come from improvising. Through enjoyable games and exercises, students who benefit from regular improv practice gain more confidence, creativity, and cognitive flexibility while exercising the basic improv skills of listening, reacting, collaborating with others, and trusting oneself. Whether you are a complete beginner or a potter who wishes to advance your techniques, this class will assist students of all levels to expand their knowledge and creativity using the Potter's Wheel. *Included in the price of your class is a 25lb bag of clay as well as 2.5 hours of open studio time per week, to be used immediately prior to your class time. Students may purchase 1 additional bag of clay from The Art Center over the course of the session. For a total of 50lbs maximum per session. This course will have guided step-by-step demonstrations each week consisting of paint techniques with acrylics and mixed media on canvas. Inspired by abstract painters such as Picasso, Matisse and other contemporary styles, we will explore expressive and imaginative ways to create abstract portraits. We will learn how to create designs, prepare surfaces and build up the paint surface with layers. We will learn how to select, blend and mix colors as well as texturing, sponging, stippling, glazing, dry-brush, palette knife, dripping, collage and other techniques. No previous drawing or painting experience is required to take this course. SUPPLY LIST The Instructor will bring examples of all materials the first day of class. You may want to wait to see all the materials before purchasing them. If you already purchased acrylic paints, bring what you have and a couple of stretched canvases or canvas boards. You can wait to purchase gels, pastes and mediums until after the first day of class. -Brushes: An assortment of soft synthetic brushes from flats, rounds, & filberts in a range of sizes from small to large, one 2” soft, flat “gesso” brush. This class meets for 4 weeks and is priced accordingly. -Primed & stretched canvases or canvas boards. Suggested: 11x14, 12x16, 16x20. -Palette: disposable palettes, foam plates or paper palettes -Palette knife: at least one flexible pointed chisel-shaped metal knife -1 lg carry-all for wet paintings & tool box for your supplies -1 sm jar of Modeling Paste (see example in class) -1 sm jar of Gloss Gel Medium (see example in class) -1 sm bottle each of Acrylic Matte Medium (see example in class) - I container for water (ie. larger yogurt container) -1 roll of paper towels - disposable gloves (optional) -Paint: names of paints are all different, here is a recommended list with comparative names for acrylic paints. Improv is the best introduction to the theatre arts for young students. Players will build on their imaginations while they spontaneously create stories, characters, and scenes. Through fun games and exercises, students will learn the essential improv skills of listening, reacting, collaborating with others, and trusting oneself.  Improv nurtures confidence and connection in students. Want to try acrylic painting but aren't sure you'd like to commit to buying all the materials and taking an 8 week class? Look no further! Join artist Leslie Murphy for a 4 week class and learn the basics of acrylic painting! Working with a guided, step by step process, we will create two painting studies, touching on basics of the medium and materials needed, color mixing, handling the brush, and more. This is an excellent way to dip your toes in the waters of painting and is a great stepping stone to an 8 week class. $10 supply fee paid directly to instructor during first class. Art bites intro classes can be taken in either order (1 first or 2 first or vice versa). Each intro class has the same level of painting, just different projects. Intro to acrylic painting 1 should only be taken once. Held April - May
