- FALL 2) Leslie T. Batik Soy Wax Layering
This four week mini session is an exploration of expressive abstract techniques applied to silk. A contemporary approach to Batik, resulting in beautiful fine art for wall hangings or wearable scarves. Students will create dynamic abstract silk paintings inspired by the Abstract Expressionist movement. Working on a 22”x22” silk square suspended and stretched on a frame, students will combine soy wax layering and thickened dye to create whimsical and abstract painterly compositions. Influenced by many of the twentieth century abstract expressionist painters, this is an opportunity for participants to free themselves up to create intuitive, expressive and emotional art on silk. “Abstract Expressionism”, a modern art movement originating in New York in the 1940's after the second World War is characterized by spontaneous brushstrokes, large canvases, and vibrant colors. Some of the renowned artists of this era include Mark Rothco, Helen Frankenthaler, Hans Homan, Joan Mitchel and Lee Krasner among many others. This class takes inspiration from the radical approach to art taken in this era, sometimes referred to as "action painting" because of the physical movement one may feel in viewing some of these works. Students should bring paper towels and disposable gloves Supply fee of $25.00 payable to the instructor at the first class.
