Service Description

Take the mystery out of glazing when completing your ceramic art. The class will include a general overview of glazes as well as the details that have eluded you on the subtleties of ceramic glaze. This class is for students of all levels, but some experience in on our of our ceramic wheel and/or hand building classes is necessary. We will cover glazing tools, basic materials, an introduction to glaze chemistry, mixing, glazing and fixing your glazes. Many tips and tricks will be discussed to make glazing ceramics more fun and successful. Required: "Amazing Glaze", by Gabriel Kline. Available on Amazon for $18. You can find the link in Kathy Archambault's Instructor Bio. Optional: Bring two bisque pieces for a one day spraying and special firing session to create crystals. Dust Mask: N-95 or N-100 dust mask or OSHA-approved respirator is required. Crystal glaze will be provided. Curiosity and participation are encouraged as we learn from the efforts of everyone. Toxicity- health hazards & general safety guidelines -Special glazing techniques- glaze trailers spray guns (manual - demo)/booth(discuss), banding wheel, splatter A Bit of Chemistry -Basic history and classification of materials (yes we will look at the periodic table of elements) -Three components of a typical glaze- how to read a recipe -Why fire to cone 6? Stull chart presented -Materials, Oxides, Colorants, and Melt Tests -Basic oxides and what they do in our cone 6 glazes -Stains vs pure oxides properties and how to use -Why certain glazes run- melting of materials Mixing Glazes -Specific gravity -Flocculation/deflocculation- glaze additives: solving glaze issues -Glaze additives and the effect of the glaze: opacifiers, certain flux materials Glaze Application -Bisque firing, glaze consistency, waxing/latex and prep. -Brushing, pouring, dipping, spraying- Handling large pieces & repair Kilns & Firing -Firing methods: Electric, Reduction, Gas, Sagar, Wood, Raku explained -Electric kiln firing cycles Glaze Faults -Diagnosing a glaze fault: Bloating, Crawing, Crazing, Dunting, Leaching, Pinholes & Shivering Other Topics -Creating glaze line blends -Making test tiles -Commercial glazes & additives -Other surface materials: decals, underglaze, terra sigilatta, creating crystals

Cancellation Policy

1. The Art Center reserves the right to cancel classes or camps due to insufficient enrollment. If The Art Center cancels a class or camp, registrants will receive a refund. We reserve the right to substitute an instructor if necessary. 2. The Art Center does not pro-rate class or camp fees. 3. Membership fees are non-refundable. 4. Four business days notice must be given before the start of the first class if you wish to cancel. 5. Registration changes and cancellations will incur an administrative fee of $30. 6. Refunds will be processed within 30 days after the 1st day of the start of class. 6a. For high demand classes: if you cancel your registration and vacate your seat, we will retain 50% of your initial registration fee to pay the instructor, if the seat cannot be filled. This is in addition to the $30 administration fee. 7. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made after the beginning of the class or camp.
